Joseph Kinyanjui is accused of attacking his wife with a hammer two years ago. The man was found guilty of attempted murder by an Olmsted County District Court jury on Thursday.
First-degree premeditated attempted murder, second-degree murder, first-degree assault and second-degree assault using a dangerous weapon.
Jurors were equally asked to say whether the crime was committed in the presence of a child.
It was established that indeed Kinyanjui had assaulted his wife as kids watched.
In his ruling, Judge Joseph Chase sentenced the suspect to 240 months in state prison which is the maximum sentence that is allowed for the crime.
“Words are inadequate to convey the horrific facts of this attack,” the Judge said.
At around 7 p.m. on May 8, 2019, Rochester police were notified of a ruckus at a residence in the 5100 blocks of 54th Avenue Northwest.
On reaching the scene, they found a 40-year-old woman and her daughter stranded outside the building.
According to Rochester Police Captain, Casey Moilanen said that the woman then told the officers that her father was assaulting her mother.
The 66-year-old woman suffered a fractured skull, two broken wrists, a broken lower back and multiple facial lacerations.
