Former presidential aspirant Peter Solomon Gichira on Tuesday petitioned the court to find Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati unfit to hold public office.
Mr. Gichira accused Chebukati of lying under oath to deliberately lock him out of the presidential race.
“A state officer, for instance, is required to accurately and honestly represent information to the public and demonstrate honesty in the conduct of public affairs. Chebukati has neither those two requirements,” read court documents.
The petitioner further claims that Chebukati is in gross violation of the Leadership and Integrity Act 2012 for allegedly handling his presidential application in a biased manner.
He further stated he had previously petitioned the National Assembly on the matter but was stopped for not meeting the requirements of a parliamentary petition.
In May 2017, Mr. Gichira was arraigned in court for attempting suicide after he was disqualified by the electoral body.
The court was told that Mr. Gichira attempted to jump off the sixth floor of IEBC’s offices at Anniversary Towers.
He was charged with attempted suicide, malicious damage and creating disturbance, charges he denied.
