The man accused of conning MPs out of their cash will spend four days in police cells, a Nairobi court has ruled.
Senior Principal Magistrate Christine Njagi issued the order when Wazir Benson Masubo, alias Wazir Chacha, appeared before her on Tuesday.
The detention is meant to give police more time to investigate the case after telling the court that they were yet to wrap up their crime busting.
Ms Njagi also ordered that the accused be taken to Mathari Mental Hospital for psychiatric assessment after his lawyer claimed that he has mental problems.
Chief Inspector John Kipruto, the investigating officer, told the court that he needed more time to complete his investigations.
He said there are some exhibits they needed retrieved to be used as evidence against Mr Chacha.
He opposed the release of the accused on bond, saying he is a flight risk.
But lawyer Job Geresa, for the accused, had opposed the application, saying the detective was is unfair to his client.
The lawyer denied claims that Mr Wazir is a flight risk after he was arrested in Tanzania.
Mr Gerasa said his client was in Tanzania for treatment.
Mr Wazir, he said, has been in and out of hospitals seeking treatment from his mental illness.
The magistrate directed that the accused be arraigned before the court on Monday for further directions.
