Police officer surrenders after shooting a civilian

A police officer shot and wounded a civilian outside a local bank in Imenti South, Meru County before surrendering to his bosses on Tuesday, January 11.

In the report, Roy Muchiri shot the civilian identified as Pharis Karani Gitobu on his leg following a disagreement outside the bank.

The matter was reported by one Robert Kabetu who is attached to the Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU).

Members of the public and a section of police officers attached to Nkubu Police Station rushed the injured who had been shot on the left ankle to Consolata Mission Hospital.

Medical personnel at the facility then decided to admit him as he needed urgent medical attention.

After the incident, Muchiri surrendered to the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Nkubu Police station.

“He was disarmed and the firearm was taken to the station’s armoury where it was kept as an exhibit,” the report read in part.

The police officer was arrested and placed in the station’s cells and investigations kicked off.

It has been established that officers attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are planning to capture a statement from the victim in order to ascertain what led to the action.

Last month, A police officer attached to police headquarters operations branch and seconded to the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has been arrested in Nakuru County while attempting to sell a firearm.

Police Constable Patrick Kimani was arrested by detectives from Naivasha Sub-County at Craft Yard Club where the transaction was supposed to take place.

He was in company of a taxi driver Joseph Mwangi Maina, 38 years old and a 30 years old woman Joy Wairimu Kinoti.

Detectives were able to recover a pistol with 15 rounds of ammunition, a box containing 25 rounds of ammunition, a Certificate of Appointment, four NEMA and several phones.

And in Machakos County a policewoman was seriously injured after a lorry run over her right leg fracturing it.

According to a police report, Sergent Phylis Mwikali of Athi River police station was controlling traffic at Mlolongo Flyover along the Nairobi to Mombasa road, when she pulled over an Isuzu Lorry driven by Alex Kihara, as the driver parked the lorry, he run over the officers right leg.

She was rushed to hospital for medical attention while the lorry was impounded and the driver put in custody.
