Police in Kirinyaga county have arrested six people in connection with the murder of a university student in June 10, 2022.
Collins Kipchumba Kimeto, a software engineering student at Kirinyaga University, lost his life at a local hospital in Kutus after being waylaid and robbed by the suspects as he made his way to a hostel.
The suspects reportedly hit him on the head with a blunt object and he succumbed to his injuries a day later.
They are currently being detained at Kerugoya Police Station pending legal action.
The suspects, Kirinyaga County Commissioner Moses Ivuto said, were arrested in different locations with four being nabbed in Murang’a County while the remaining two were flushed out from their hideout in Mwea, Kirinyaga County.
“The security officers have managed to arrest six key suspects who are under police custody. The six are connected to the heinous act which led to the rioting of the students on June 10,” Ivuto told journalists on Friday.
Ivuto however opted not to make the identities of the six public, intimating that doing so might interfere with ongoing investigations.
The suspects are expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are completed by police to answer for murder charges.
Kimeto’s murder was met by protests by his fellow students, who cordoned off the Kagio-Kutus road and destroyed property, accusing police of laxity in tracing his alleged killers and addressing insecurity in the region.
Ivuto however reassured area residents of their safety urging locals to work in tandem with police to rein in crime in the county.
